How to develop a cloud consultant mindset to land a role!
Memes to brighten your day
For many people who are just starting there role are attempting to land one for a Amazon Workspace or cloud consultant. One of the hardest parts is passing the test for a certification and attempting to get hire. During interviews you will move than likely be tested for your skills. In most IT interviews the interviewer will ask you what you would do in a hypothetical situation if something broke within AWS. Based of your answer they can get a sense of your skill level and thought process. At this point the interviewer will determine if your skills are what they desire.
Being judged for a on the spot interview question, is like being judged on American Idol never pleasant for the person auditioning…
Unfortunately, for many people, when asked questions on the spot, they answer quickly due to nerves and do not come across as articulate as they truly are under normal circumstances.
How do you get rid of interview nerves?
That’s easy: start by changing your mindset. One of the many advantages of being in IT is that you learn how to have a curious mind. During interviews, when the interviewer asks you technical questions, keep the following in mind before you answer.
Example Scenario
Interviewer: If our company were to make a new website to accept new orders and offer support with AI for returns what services would you use to accomplish this. We also want to keep cost low and have a set budget.
You: Before i answer i would like to ask some questions to ensure i am meeting the clients needs.
Resources: What is the set budget?
Resources: Do you already have the AI setup or not yet?
How: How will the order data be tracked?
The: Is the goal of this website just to have customers place orders and returns or will it be used for anything else?
By asking yourself these questions, you begin to think like a cloud consultant. In cloud roles, you are given tasks to complete within a certain amount of time, typically called ‘Sprints.’ Each task can vary from helping fix a current service hosted with Amazon Workspace to helping decide what new services need to be created to support a new product, like a website.
During interviews, if you slow down and ask yourself and the interviewer these questions, you will not only sound professional, but also potentially uncover major hints at what the right answer is.
In this scenario, if the interviewer responds by saying they do not have their AI setup and they need a way to track order data, you can respond by saying:
Based on your needs, I would recommend using the AI feature for Lex bot to pre-configure answers and intents to manage returns. For storing the order data, S3 buckets can be used to store the data and make it readily available for easy access. However, with your budget in mind, there are a few ways to cut costs for these services, etc.
For all companies, the number one thing they love to hear is how to cut down on their Amazon Workspace bill!
This method of thinking shows recruiters that you are thoughtful and demonstrates your knowledge of services. It will also help you sharpen your skills in a real job where they will present a problem to you and expect you to know how to fix it or find the resources to get the answer.
No company will have job responsibilities like a regular cloud course. This means they will not give you definitions of each service and have you study from a book all day. They will expect you to know how to use those products in real-life scenarios.
To grow your skills and guarantee yourself a cloud role, you must challenge yourself. Another helpful exercise is to create fake companies and identify issues they have. Then, try to see which Amazon services would resolve those issues and use YouTube to learn how to use those services. By developing this questioning mentality, you ensure you can master any interview!
